What is DebiCheck?

DebiCheck is South Africa’s authenticated debit order system. The customer confirms a debit order mandate with their own bank, through a banking app, USSD or a card and PIN, before the first collection runs. Because the bank holds proof that the customer agreed, a properly authenticated DebiCheck collection is much harder to reverse than an ordinary EFT debit order.

TT1 (real-time)
The customer approves the mandate immediately while the transaction is in progress, usually in their banking app or by USSD.
TT2 (delayed)
The customer approves the mandate later, within a set window, through their bank’s channel.
TT3 (card and PIN)
The customer approves the mandate by inserting their card and entering their PIN at a terminal.
02

What changed for debit orders in April 2026?

From 13 April 2026, the window for customers to dispute a debit order in South Africa dropped from up to 365 days to 60 days, according to payment providers Netcash and directdebit.co.za. Authenticated DebiCheck mandates remain the strongest protection against reversals, which gives lenders and insurers a clear reason to move collections onto DebiCheck now.

03

What does a DebiCheck integration involve?

A DebiCheck integration connects your loan or policy system to a sponsoring bank or payment provider so that mandates are created, authenticated, amended and collected automatically. The work covers mandate creation at sign-up, handling of authentication outcomes, collection scheduling, retries within the rules, and reconciliation back into your ledger.

Mandate lifecycle
Create, authenticate, amend and cancel mandates from your own system, with status tracked per customer.
Collections engine
Scheduling, tracking dates, retries and failure handling within PASA rules.
Reconciliation
Match collections and returns to loan or policy accounts without manual spreadsheets.
Debt review and credit insurance
Adjust instalments for customers under debt review and link credit insurance to the collection flow.

How much can DebiCheck reduce collection costs?

Results depend on the starting point. On a collections gateway our team led for a consumer credit portfolio, moving to authenticated DebiCheck collections with automated debt review and credit insurance workflows cut collection costs by 50%.

05

Where does AI fit in collections?

AI fits in collections where staff spend time reading or predicting. Examples are reading supporting documents, flagging accounts likely to fail before the run date, and suggesting the best collection day per customer. The mandate, authentication and dispute handling should stay deterministic. Regulators and banks expect those rules to behave the same way every time.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who needs DebiCheck?

Any South African business that collects recurring payments by debit order and wants protection against reversals. That includes lenders, insurers, funeral policy providers, gyms, schools and subscription businesses.

Can we connect DebiCheck to our existing loan management system?

Yes. Inople builds the integration layer between your loan or policy system and your sponsoring bank or payment provider, so your team keeps working in the system it already uses.

Do we still need EFT debit orders after moving to DebiCheck?

Often yes, for a transition period. Many businesses run both while they move existing customers onto authenticated mandates. The system should track which customers are on which rail.

How does the 60-day dispute window affect lenders?

From 13 April 2026 customers have up to 60 days, not 365, to dispute a debit order. That reduces long-tail reversal risk, but authenticated DebiCheck mandates remain the strongest defense against disputes.

Does Inople handle POPIA and National Credit Act requirements?

We design collections systems to meet POPIA data handling and National Credit Act requirements, including debt review rules. Your compliance officer and legal advisers remain responsible for sign-off.

Can you also build PayShap payments?

PayShap is South Africa’s real-time payment rail. We can scope a PayShap integration alongside DebiCheck. Our past collections work was on DebiCheck, so we would say so plainly in any proposal.
